The MAP project (October 2017 – June 2023) approaches the religions of Antiquity through onomastic sequences used to characterise various aspects of the gods. It aims to catalogue epigraphic, papyrological and literary sources, to record them in a database, to process them using statistical tools, network analysis and cartography, and to analyse, according to context, the divine names as elements giving access to the modes of representation, structuring and declination of the divine, as well as to the strategies of communication between men and gods in a multitude of historical contexts. The comparative approach, which focuses on the Greek and Semitic worlds, between 1000 BC and 400 CE also allows to deal with the issues of transfers, translations, adaptation of names, as well as their iconographic and narrative transpositions.
The project, funded by the ERC (European Research Council), is coordinated by Corinne Bonnet, at the Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès, and therefore takes place in Toulouse. Missions related to the project, in France and abroad, are also planned. The MAP project team is made up of 4 post-docs, 1 PhD student and an administrative and community manager, not forgetting Guest Researchers who are on research stays in Toulouse to collaborate on the project. In accordance with the provisions of the ERC, the results of the project are all intended to be disseminated in open access.
Within the MAP project, the person recruited will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other team members. His/her work will also involve collaboration with various departments and partners of the University of Toulouse and the MAP project.
His/her main task will be to develop the policy for processing and exploiting the data contained in the MAP database (https://base-map-polytheisms.huma-num.fr/). The targeted exploitations are mainly statistical analyses, network modelling and analysis and data visualisations. He/she will make proposals for relevant numerical tools and will consider specific developments if necessary.
The person recruited will also have a training role with regard to all the actors of the MAP project in terms of Digital Humanities and the tools set up.
1/ List and analyse the needs of the project in the field of Digital Humanities;
2/ Propose and implement data exploration and visualisation tools;
3/ Write Guides for the users of all these tools, i.e. team members and guest researchers;
4/ Carry out a technological watch;
5/ Document the processing and analysis of project data;
6/ Train the team in the field of Digital Humanities.
– Master methods and tools of the Digital Humanities useful to the MAP project: digital corpuses, databases, statistical processing, etc.;
– Know the Huma-Num infrastructure and the proposed tools;
– Have a good knowledge of the SQL language; knowledge of other languages and experience in the creation of webmapping interfaces would be an additional asset;
– Master methods and tools for quantitative analysis of historical data, as well as methods and tools for Social Network Analysis; mastery of data visualization tools would be an additional asset;
– Know the legal aspects of research data (protection, ownership, etc.), as well as national and European policies in this area;
– Have a good knowledge of ancient societies;
– General skills in written and oral presentation, in French and English, as well as in collective networked research.
– Master’s degree in Digital Humanities with an in-depth knowledge of Antiquity.
– Master’s degree in Classics (history, archaeology, literature) with a Digital Humanities orientation or certified knowledge in this field.
Remuneration according to public service scales.
